On October 12 and 13, 2020 the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Instituto Nacional de las Mujeres, Embassy of Ireland in Mexico and UN Women organised a Conference to Commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the UN Security Council Resolution on Women Peace and Security.
The two-days online event focused on the importance of women in peace processes in light of the increasing conflicts. Throughout five panels, starting from an evaluation on the implementation of the resolution, discussions addressed the issue of what should be done, in the short and long term, to ensure women’s inclusion, underlining that “while it is true that only a small number of women are mediators, signatories or negotiators, the engagement of women in mediation makes peace agreements 64% less likely to fail, and makes them 35% more likely to last at least 15 years. On average, almost 50% of all negotiated settlements fail in the first five years of their implementation. ” Panels also focused on women leadership and the role women play both in the armed forces and during peace efforts.
MWMN member Claudia Maffettone took part in panel “Peacebuilding and Reducing Conflict”. During the panel, speakers shared experiences in participating in peacebuilding processes, conflict mediation, the reduction of violence in conflictive contexts, accompaniment of victims and the search for disappeared persons.
